Our History

In 1976, George ("Big Fella") Wilson, Earl Evans, and Columbus ("Scotty") Scott decided after struggling through many rounds of golf that other men just beginning the game would enjoy having some laughs as well. Using their last names as an acronym and adding a 'T' for tour, they shared the word thus W.E.S.T. Golf Club was formed.

They started touring around the greater Cincinnati area playing a different course every week. Since those early days, many golfers have come and gone. However, many who love the game have continued the strong legacy and commitment to the W.E.S.T. Golf Club and the community.

Our History.png

From 1985 to the late 2000’s our members volunteered to work in Tony Yates’ “Caring For Kids” annual tournament, we also worked with the youth on Saturday mornings throughout the summer, In the early years of club the Founders and members started a scholarship fund, donating money from their own pockets toward a scholarship program. In 2003 we took our first Charter bus trip to Clearview Golf Club (East Canton Ohio) the first black owned golf course in the United States.

From 2004 to 2019 we chartered buses for golf trips nationwide. In 2010 we began flying to different golf destinations etc… Arizona to Florida and many other places. Since 2007 the W.E.S.T. Golf Club members have volunteered to work with the “Reaching Out For Kids” organization teaching young kids the fundamentals of golf on Saturday mornings. Over the years the W.E.S.T. Golf Club has built a strong relationship with Reaching out for Kids founder (Ron Dumas). Our club is proud to support (ROFK) in their dedication to making a difference in children’s lives through golf and education. The ROFK organization helps youth foster an interest in golf at an early age. The program promotes character and education, life enhancing values such as honesty, and sportsmanship, thus increasing their potential for success. We salute Ron and our membership for their efforts to continue the game's growth. Since the early 2000 our club members have donated and delivered Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families in the communities and collected Coats for Kids and much more charitable endeavors.

In 2008 our club began a partnership with the Cincinnati police department donating Christmas toys to needy children. In 2009 we held our first scholarship tournament at the (Grizzly) King Island golf course, now the tournament is an annual event. The WEST Golf Club now enjoys an additional philanthropic component awarding several annual scholarships to youth heading to college. Thus far we have donated more than forty thousand dollars to deserving students. The Flava cup is a one day tournament that brings regional golf clubs together to compete for cup and celebrate the end of the golf season.

In 2014 the W.E.S.T. Golf Club committed to host the Flava Cup and keep the Flava Cup tradition going. The Flava Cup brings several golf clubs together embracing the importance of camaraderie and fellowship. The Flava Cup has grown into one of the largest one day Club/Team tournaments around. Golf clubs come from near and far wearing their clubs colors proudly, this is an awesome display of unity and friendship. Golf clubs that completed in last year's Flava Cup competition: Fairway golf club, Madden Women, Iron Men, Ball Hawks, TOTS, Lexington swingers, Les Birdies, Margaret Brown & the Cleveland golf team, Motor City Eagles, Indy Junkies, and Team Kokomo. Also in 2014, the W.E.S.T. Golf Club made history by voting in the first female member, Natasha Williams.

The W.E.S.T. Golf Club continues to evolve and grow by attracting new members each spring. This is a testament to our founders whose purpose for the Club was to grow the game and create unity and friendship and learn to play golf & have fun.
